In the Uppingham School Roll (which is full of RFC etc attachments, including Malcolm Campbell and Arthur Hale) there is an entry for :

John Simpson Simpson
Born September 1899, son of W Simpson, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk
Attended Uppingham May 1913-January 1917
Lieutenant Lancers & RAF

I assume that his repeated surname indicates Scottish ancestry (though it could be a typo ?).

By this time, recruits and new commissions would have joined Cavalry 'Corps', rather than Regiments, which is why it just says 'Lancers'.

There is a JS Simpson who joined the 12th Royal Lancers in 1918 (presumably as a 2Lt), but there is no corresponding record that he served with the Regiment in France. So, I would assume that he went from the training Reserve Regiment to the RAF

Ancestry turns up one possible -a John S Simpson who died, aged 55, in Colchester, in January-March 1953 - but nothing more useful than that.

The August 1918 Air Force List doesn't include him.

Any more ideas ?
