Hi Errol,
I've found some more service history information on J. Ross, although his connection with New Zealand is still a mystery.
Everything I've found to date: -
 

S.R.8. J. Ross. Royal Flying Corps, Special Reserve, Category (a)

 

Attested 7/8/14, enlisting under the terms of the Special Reserve, Category (a), of 4 years/Duration of War.

Mobilized and posted to the Recruits Depot, South Farnborough.

Posted to No.1 Squadron, 17/8/14.

Posted to Workshops Flight, No.1 Squadron, 13/9/14.

Transferred to Headquarters Flight, No.1 Squadron, 22/9/14.

Appointed 1st Class Air Mechanic, 2/11/14.

Travelled on Stores lorry when No.1 Squadron moved from Brooklands to Netheravon, 12/11/14.

A Court of Enquiry held to enquire into deficiencies in equipment, 8/12/14.

Disembarked France, 3/3/15.

Granted leave of absence from 7/11/15 to 13/11/15.

Admitted to Hospital and struck off the strength of No.1 Squadron, 26/2/16.

Discharged from Hospital and re-posted to No.1 Squadron (“A” Flight), 25/6/16.

Awarded 14 days “Confined to Camp”, and deprived 7 days pay, 21/12/16, for the offence of “Whilst on Active Service, Neglect of Duty in failing to keep fire extinguishers charged”.

Admitted to Hospital (sick), 8/2/18.

Rejoined from Hospital, 13/2/18.

Granted leave of absence from 20/3/18 to 3/4/18.

Transferred to the R.A.F. on its formation and reclassified Private 1st Class (Cook), 1/4/18.

Rejoined from leave, 5/4/18.

Admitted to No.7 Casualty Clearing Station (sick) and struck off the strength of No.1 Squadron, 30/12/18.

Reclassified Aircraftsman 1st Class, 1/1/19.

Many thanks for these additional details. I've mentioned Ross in my latest book, A Passion For Flight - New Zealand aviation before the Great War: Volume Three – The Joe Hammond story and military beginnings 1910-1914, which is being printed as I write. I live in the fond hope that a reader will at some future date come forth with information as to exactly who he was!
